Popular Name: Amaranthus
Botanical Name and Pronunciation: Amaranthus caudatus (am-a-RAN-thus kaw-DAH-tus)
Common Name(s): Love-Lies-Bleeding, Tassel Flower, Velvet Flower, Joseph's Coat, Cat's Tail, Prince's Feather, Summer Poinsettia
Color(s): yellow, red, purple, crimson, burgundy, reddish-purple, green
Form and Size: Amaranthus has slender, cascading flower clusters called racemes. Its stems are leafy and can grow anywhere from 12 - 24 inches in height.
Vase Life: 7 - 10 days
Availability: summer - mid-winter
Care Instructions: Cut stems under water and place in fresh water with flower food. Remove any leaves at the bottom of the stem, if they are present. This flower is poisonous and can cause serious illness.
History and Usage: A member of the Amaranthaceae (amaranth) family, it originated in Peru, Africa, and India. Amaranthus is the Greek word for unfading. It is named that way because its flowers are long-lasting. This flower goes well in larger, showy arrangements where it creates a beautifully cascading look. Amaranthus also dries very well to be preserved for long after its vase life of up to ten days.
Points of Interest: Amaranthus has a long history including use as tomb decorations because it symbolizes immortality. Some of amaranthus relatives are celosia, globe-amaranth, and blood-leaf. Some of its other relatives from the Amaranthaceae family are considered weeds, like pigweed, tumbleweed and water hemp.
