History and Usage: A member of the Dipsacaceae (teasel) family, it originated in southern Europe. Its name comes from the Latin word scabies (itch) because the leaves, which have a rough texture, were said to cure an itch. Atropurpurea means dark purple.
Points of Interest: Upon an initial sighting, this flower looks to be from the Compositae (aster) family. It is closely related to cephalaria, knautia, morina and succisa.
